Ten Flucos sign to play in college

Fluvanna County High School Athletic Director Scott Morris presided over one of a high schools’ happy events on April 15. Ten Fluco athlete committed to continue with their respective  sports at the college or community college level.

Abbey Fuller committed to D-1 program. She will be swimming at the University of Richmond. Fuller said that she expects to swim sprint events such as the 50 and the 100 free, and possibly the 100 breaststroke, the 100 butterfly and the 200 free style. Committing to compete at the D-III level for Bridgewater University were Emily Smeds in cross country and track, and Rocco Calderone, also in cross country and track.

Two athletes also committed to compete at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. This is also a D-III school. The athletes are Caroline Stringer in softball and Allyssa Hanson in soccer. Amy Glowatch committed to play volleyball at Delaware Valley University which is a D-III school in South Eastern PA. Arianna Snoddy committed to play lacrosse at the University of Lynchburg, while Kaitlyn Bower will play soccer at Mary Baldwin University and Allyson Crothers will take her basketball skills to Virginia Wesleyan. Interestingly six of these nine will be competing in the same college sports conference. Eastern Mennonite, Bridgewater, Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan are all members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

John Boy Rittenhouse, who played on the Fluco’s Class C state championship baseball team in 2019, committed to Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, where he expects to play third base. He said that he was hoping for a D-I offer, but that the COVID pandemic caused him to lose some strong recruiting contacts. He hopes to be able to move to a D-I school after a year or two.
