Fire and rescue perform technical rescue

Press release

The Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue, with the Palmyra Volunteer Fire Company, were called to the Broken Island subdivision Monday (Jan. 24) to rescue a workman who had fallen into an excavation hole.

The first responders arrived to find the man had a broken leg, which required a technical rescue.

Upon arrival to the scene, Lake Monticello fire personnel found the man trapped in an excavation hole approximately 5 feet deep by  5 feet wide, lying next to a propane tank which was in the process of being installed.

Fire personnel entered the hole outfitted with safety harnesses, secured by ropes, and began assessing and preparing the victim to be removed from the hole. The victim’s leg was splinted and a KED (immobilization device) was placed onto the victim. Ropes were attached to the KED and the victim was lifted from the hole and placed into a Stokes basket where he was turned over to paramedics from the Lake Monticello Rescue Squad who treated the victim and transported him to the University of Virginia hospital.
