Lafayette marker dedication set for Nov. 3

Press Release

The Marquis de Lafayette will be in Fluvanna County Nov. 3 for the ceremony marking the dedication of The Lafayette Trail Marker near Currie’s Tavern, said organizers from the Fluvanna County Historical Society.

Lafayette, in the form of re-enactor George Gaige, will arrive from Columbia by carriage at 3 p.m. that Sunday for the dedication at Lyles Baptist Church in Wilmington, in a re-enactment of his 1824 visit.

Other outdoor festivities after the dedication will include singing of period and patriotic songs, dancing the Virginia Reel with the Fluvanna Flutterwheels, games, and a buffet that includes foods that would have been enjoyed by the group of Fluvanna citizens in 1824. Attendees are encouraged to wear period costume and are encouraged to bring chairs.

Lyles Baptist Church is at 92 Lyles Church Lane, Palmyra (four miles east of Palmyra at the end of Courthouse Road). For more information or to get involved, contact 434-981-8085 or email fluvannahistory.org.
