The Fluvanna County High volleyball team hosted Monticello High on Sept.25. To win a volleyball match a team must win three games. The Flucos did that easily. They topped the Mustangs 25-13, 25-18 and 25-13. This was the team’s 12th win against only one loss.

The Flucos were led by senior Molly McCall, In the three games, McCall recorded an impressive 15 kill shots, most of which were fierce and unreturnable. She also had four blocks and six service aces. McCall makes the Flucos hard to beat, but she is not a one player team. Other Fluco girls are also talented players. In this match, senior Alyssa Lewis contributed six kill shots and sophomore Nora Ferrell had four kill shots and 16 assists.

In the opening game, the Mustangs looked competitive early.  McCall fired a kill shot to put the Flucos up by one at 6-5. The Flucos won the next four points for a 10-5 lead. The lead was stretched to seven at 15-8 and then to ten at 23-13. McCall served the final two points for the 25-13 win.

The second game started much like the first. This time the Mustangs held on longer, as the score was tied at 8-8 and again at 15-15. The Flucos then ran off nine straight points with McCall serving. The Mustangs came back with three straight points for a 24-18 score, but a final point for the Flucos ended the game at 25-18 and gave the Flucos a 2-0 lead.

In the third game, a kill shot by Lewis gave the Flucos an 8-4 lead. A block at the net made it 9-4, a ball hit out by the Mustangs gave the Flucos a commanding 10-4 lead. A kill shot by senior Elizabeth Garrett put the Flucos up 15-6. McCall and Lewis then carried the Flucos to the easy 25-13 win.

Fluco coach Christi Harlowe advised after the match that McCall will be moving on next year to play at the college level for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond.

The Flucos are slightly past the mid-point of their season. On Sept. 29 they hosted Spotswood High and on Sept. 30 they traveled to Albemarle High. On Oct. 2, they will play at Charlottesville. On Oct. 7 they will host Western Albemarle, the only team to put a dent in their current record.

District play will start on Oct. 28 and the Flucos will almost certainly be involved.
