Long night for Fluvanna girls lacrosse in 18-6 loss

By Duncan Nixon

The Fluvanna girls lacrosse team hosted Western Albemarle on April 21. The Warriors entered with a 4-1 record, while the Flucos stood at 1-4.

Western Albemarle jumped out to a decisive early lead, scoring eight goals in the first quarter.

The Warriors struck first on the opening possession, winning the draw and scoring after two quick passes. After a minute and a half, the Flucos responded with a goal by freshman Izabella Campbell—the first of her three on the night.

Unfortunately for Fluvanna, Western Albemarle answered with seven straight goals to close the quarter with an 8-1 lead. The Warriors moved the ball well, with most of their goals coming from point-blank range.

The second quarter started more evenly, with the Flucos holding their own. With 8:06 left in the half, sophomore Zoe Jeffries scored her first of two goals. Fluvanna could not sustain the momentum, however, and Western Albemarle added four more goals before halftime to take a 12-2 lead.

The Warriors opened the third quarter with three more goals, triggering a running clock for the remainder of the game. The Flucos scored with 5:16 left in the period, as Jeffries netted her second goal on an assist from Campbell. Western Albemarle led 16-3 at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, Fluvanna outscored Western Albemarle 3-2. Campbell added two more goals, and junior Riley Bishop also scored.

After the game, Coach Jennifer Payne cited senior Alexia Wood for her toughness on defense and senior goalkeeper Megan Drumheller for handling constant pressure. She also noted that standout senior attacker Savannah Peterson was out with an injury.

Fluvanna hosted Goochland on April 29 and will travel to Goochland on May 1. After that, the team has four games remaining in the regular season: home matchups on May 5 and May 6 against Monticello and Brentsville, followed by an away game at Orange County on May 8 and a final home game against Charlottesville on May 12.
