‘wear blue’ movement encourages Americans to honor fallen service members through Memorial Day runs, walks

As Memorial Day approaches, the nonprofit wear blue: run to remember is encouraging Americans to honor fallen service members through walks, runs, and other acts of remembrance.

At the center of this national effort is a simple but powerful invitation: carry a name, move with purpose, and honor the fallen.

Participants may choose to honor someone personally meaningful to them or receive the name of a fallen service member through the group’s Hero Match program.

“Memorial Day is more than a moment,” said Ryan Taniguchi, the organization’s director of community runs. “It is an opportunity to actively remember. When we carry a name and move with purpose, we ensure that sacrifice is not only acknowledged, but lived and honored in a tangible way.”

Events and individual activities will take place nationwide in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day. Many include a “Circle of Remembrance,” during which the names of fallen service members are read aloud.

Founded in 2010, wear blue: run to remember supports Gold Star and Surviving families, veterans, active-duty military personnel, and civilian supporters through community events centered on remembrance and connection.

Participation is free and open to all fitness levels. People may join organized local events or participate virtually from anywhere.
