A ribbon cutting for a new playground shelter at Central Elementary School was held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, a week before students returned to classes.
The new 24×25-foot shelter was a result of a project by a group of five graduates of the Fluvanna Leadership Development Program.
The project group obtained a large donation from Tenaska, along with smaller donations from Lowe’s, Home Depot, Wahoo BBQ and Arm-Strong Landscaping to build the shelter, which has two solar fans in the ceiling and a half dozen picnic tables.
“This is the only Fluvanna school without a playground shelter,” said Debra Hawrysko, who suggested the project. “My grandson got dehydrated and almost nauseous on this playground.”
Other members of the project team were Paula Franklin, Susan Cantrell, Grady Snyder and Cody Davidson.
“This is great, because I was hot,” said fourth grader Saxon Johnson, Hawrysko’s grandson, who attended the ribbon cutting. “This will be a big help if kids need to cool off,” Johnson said.
Each Leadership Development class is divided into several project groups, each of which picks a project to take on. Previous projects have included the Studio Arts Tour, downtown Palmyra redevelopment, and various projects at Pleasant Grove Park.
