It’s true that the economy has hit live entertainment in a head-on collision; people who normally would go to live performances, think twice. But the Fluvanna Arts Council opened its season Saturday (Oct. 20) with local song duo and second place winners in Fluvanna’s Got Talent, Gary Osteen and Beth Brookman. Some may shy away from local talent but Osteen and Brookman proved they were entertaining and just as good as the pros. Brookman has a strong, vibrant voice and Osteen and his friend Jimmy (no last name given), were fluid and smooth with their guitars.
They were the opener for comedian Sid Davis, form North Carolina, and though the crowd was small it was an enthusiastic one that praised Osteen and Brookman for their strong performance and began laughing the moment Davis hit the stage.
“I tried to be a good Samaritan. I stopped to help a woman with a flat tire, she kept telling me to hurry up, what was taking so long, she had a meeting to go to, never try to hurry someone changing a tire with ADA, I still have the lug nuts,” Peals of laughter from the audience.
Not since Brett Leake packed them in for two performances in past years has a comedian that funny taken the stage at Carysbrook, until now and Davis wowed the crowd with his flawless timing and low-key natural expressions. Anyone who thought these performers might not hit the mark, missed a fun evening of entertainment. One can only hope they come back sometime for a repeat performance.
