Columbia mayor and council to be chosen by write-in votes

There are only 50 families in the tiny Fluvanna river town, so people serve mainly out of sense of civic responsibility, said Hancox.

Currently two married couples serve on the town council – John J. Hammond Jr. and his wife Kerry Murphy-Hammond and Ben and Courtney Howard. The other council member are Ben Saunders and Hancox. John Hammond is the mayor.

The mayor and council members – who received no compensation for their time and work – are elected by town residents for four year terms.

There are fewer than 40 registered voters in the town. When the voters are identified at the poll book, they will be given a special chit to give to the ballot worker. The ballot worker will activate a ballot for them that includes all the races in addition to the mayor and town council ballot.

Hancox said he expects the entire council to be re-elected again on Nov. 6.  Word of who’s willing to serve gets out by word of mouth, he said.

“It’s a very small place.”
