State officials said the reason for denying the waiver was because of the availability of make-up days on the school calendar of May 28, 29, and 30 and the fact that the schools could have used spring break – the first week of April — to make up days, according to a press release from the schools.
“I appreciated their questions and I especially appreciated their willingness to talk with me on several occasions in order to fully understand the rationale behind the request,” said Gena Keller of the state officials. “As I stated in our board meeting, seldom are these requests approved; however, I believe it was worth the try,” Keller.
In light of the denial, Keller said schools will be open on Tuesday, May 28, Wednesday, May 29, and Thursday, May 30 for make-up days. Teachers will have staff days from May 31 until June 4. Graduation will be on Saturday, May 25.
