Sports banquet

 

The first coach to the microphone was Steve Szarmach for girls’ track and field. He noted that the girls’ team finished third in the Jefferson District and that it had a number of outstanding performers. All-Jefferson district performers included Hannah Meador who was first in the sistrict in the pole vault, and Courtney Searcy who was first in the discus. These two were also All-Region II performers.

Boys’ track and field coach Tom Casto had a long list of athletes who won honors this year. The boys’ team brought home five Jefferson District titles. Deiondre Key was Jefferson district champion in the shot put and the discus. Chris Markham was the Jefferson District champion in the 3200 meter run, Blake Hills was the champion in the high jump and Chance Parmly won the crown in the pole vault. The boys’ team finished second overall. Also receiving All-Jefferson District honors were: Karel Bruce, Rashaad Bruce, Devin Goode, Terrell Key, Travis Moe, Nate Szarmach, Jesse VanDyke and RyQuane Washington.

Making All-Region II were: Blake Hills, Deiondre Key, Terrell Key, Chris Markham and Nate Szarmach. In addition to these all region performers, Chance Parmly, Devin Goode, Karel Bruce and the 4X100 relay team of VanDyke, the Bruces and Terrell Key all qualifiers for the AA state meet. Finally, Coach Casto noted that his squad was the team champion in three different invitational meets this year, including the Fluvanna Invitational.

Baseball coach Mike Sheridan  reported that his team finished second in the Jefferson district tournament. The team had two All-Jefferson District performers. Austin Foster was All-District at catcher, while Maxx Turner was All-District at third base. Turner was also second team as a pitcher, and outfielder Jovan Burton was also a second team selection. Coach Sheridan noted that Turner had an incredible season, batting .551 and going the entire season without striking out.

Softball coach Aime McCall was unable to report on her teams’ season, as the team was playing in the Region II tournament that night. However, the team made it to the tournament by finishing second in the Jefferson District tournament. They qualified for the Jefferson District final game by shutting out Louisa 2-0. Alexis Scott pitched the shut out and drove in the Flucos two runs with an extra base hit in the sixth inning.

Jenny Payne, girls’ lacrosse coach, stated that her team broke into the win column this year after a winless first season last year. Her team had two All-Jefferson district honorees, Clay Conner a first team selection, and Megan Graham a second team selection. Boys’ lacrosse coach Matt Taylor did not have any All-Jefferson District selectees, but he reported that his second year team also made significant progress this season.

Boys’ tennis coach Jason Davis reported that his team was 8-7 overall and very competitive thoughout the season. His number one player Michael Tamony was an All-Jefferson District honoree. Connie Banton the girls’ tennis coach reported that her team was 9-6 overall, and third in the Jefferson District.

Earl Gibson, the boys’ soccer coach, noted that his squad finished 9-4-1 on the season and took third place in the Jefferson District. Dale Ludwig, who will be going on to play soccer at American University was named Jefferson District player of the year. He and Jordan Thacker were first team selectees, and Christian Franco and Quinn Johnson made the Jefferson District second team.

Girls’ soccer coach Kristen Davis reported that her team was very young this season, and did not have as much success as the boys’ team. However, two girls’ gained All-Jefferson District honors. Kate Stutz made the first team and Kianna Childress made second team.
