Carter Albaugh was the only Division 1 signee. He was accompanied by his parents, Charles Albaugh and Libby Edwards Albaugh. He signed to play soccer at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg. Albaugh noted after the signing that he expects to play center back for the Dukes. He is taller than most soccer players so JMU may also move him forward on corner kicks for possible header shots on goal.
The other male athlete to sign on Thursday was Joel Kesterson. He is a lacrosse player. The Fluco lacrosse team is fairly new, but it has produced several Division III signees. Kesterson will play at Randolph Macon College. He was accompanied by his parents, Pam and Jeffrey Kesterson. In the post signing interview, Kesterson advised that he expects to play as a midfielder for Randolph Macon. He also said that Virginia Wesleyan was another school he considered.
Three female Fluco athletes also signed on April 21. Kara Morris, who is the Fluco softball team’s catcher, will continue her career at Richard Bland College of William and Mary. She was accompanied at the signing by her parents Bryan and Shannon Morris. According to its website, William Bland is the only residential two year school in Virginia.
Avery Haislip who continues a tradition of strong pole vault athletes at Fluvanna, will compete in that event at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg. Sitting with her for the signing were her parents Amy Haislip Shelly and Scot Denby.
Lexi Demers has played four years of varsity soccer for the Flucos. She signed to play at Emory and Henry College, located in Emory, which is in southwestern Virginia. Demers expects that she will play midfield for the Wasps next season. Her parents accompanied her at the signing. They are Heather and Jason Demers.
