It was reported that the girls’ softball team under interim coach Darren McCauley had a slow start and a stronger finish. The team placed three players on the all-conference second team. They were juniors Becca Caruthers, Toria Belew and Cassie Kingsley. Honorable mention recognition went to Mariah Tawney, Kara Morris, Sophie Kershner and Tyler Haislip. Tawney is a sophomore, Kershner and Haislip are juniors and Morris is a senior.
Coach Rose Brogan reported on the accomplishments of the girls’ track and field team. They were substantial. The girls took second place in the conference meet and third place in the regional meet. Matasha Martin led the way at the regional meet. She took first place in the 100-meter and the 200-meter dashes and second place in the high jump. As a result of this outstanding performance, she was named MVP runner at the girls’ regional meet. Other Fluco girls who were all-region were Alexandria Daniels for third place in the high jump, LaMaya Lacy for second place in the 100-meter hurdles, and Autumn Shepherd for third place in the 100 meter hurdles. Martin, Daniels and Shepherd combined with Madison Brown to make up the 4X100 relay team that captured all-region honors with a second place finish. Also garnering all-region honors were the 4X800 relay team of Saige Haney, Jackie Rodriguez, Camryn Frederick and Kristen Cabrera. Avery Haislip was also all-region with a fourth place finish in the pole vault. All of these athletes will move on to the state meet. Also qualifying for the state meet is pole vaulter Erin Blackburn who posted a state qualifying vault at an earlier meet.
Coach Tom Casto reported on the boys’ track and field team. The 4X800 team won the conference meet, and was therefore all-conference. This team consisted of Shane Morris, John Bossong, Morgan Milburn and Jack Rice. Also making all-conference was the 4X100 relay squad. It consisted of Katriel Smith, Jordan Milton, DeAndre Lewi s and Quentin Burgess. Several Fluco athletes made all-conference in field events. Shane Morris and Dylan Walker were all-conference in pole vault and Jake Morris was all conference in the shotput. In the regional meet the 4X100 relay team made all region and will go to the state meet. In addition, Zach Hartzog will go to the state meet to compete in the discus based on a throw of state qualifying distance in an earlier meet.
The boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams did not turn in winning seasons, but they continue to develop, and some players have stepped up to the all-conference first and second team level. For the boys, attackers Joel Kesterson and James Byram made second team all-conference. For the Fluco girls, it was attackers Courtney Ott and Natalie Hughes on the all-conference first team and defender Nyomi Mbuyisa on the all-conference second team.
The boys’ tennis team under coach Jason Barnett was led this year by class valedictorian Keegan Campanelli and Nikola Bajs. Campanelli was first team all-conference in singles and he and Bajs combined to be first all-conference in doubles. The girls’ team under coach Feda Morton experienced a growing year. They were led by German exchange student Hannah Battige and by senior captain Haley Hughes.
The Fluco boys’ soccer team this year was coached by Earl Gibson. Leading the way for the team on the field were senior Carter Allbaugh and junior Matthew Rafaly. Allbaugh was all-conference first team and Rafaly was all-conference second team. Last but not least, the girls’ soccer team under Coach Kristen Davis put four players on all-conference teams and had one honorable mention. Junior Cyan Coates, a strong defender, was first team all-conference. Junior Lindsay Price and seniors Alyson Moore and Katie Stutz were second team all-conference. Senior Jackie Davis and Lexi DeMers were honorable mention.
