Fluco golfers travel for Jefferson District match

Senior Jack Stanke led the way for the Flucos with an 87. In the Flucos’ first match, Stanke shot a 74 to tie for fourth place in a 12-team field. The next two finishers for the Flucos in the Jefferson District meet were sophomore Joe Pace with a 92 and junior Brennan Baber with a 97.

In high school golf, the competition is straight medal play. Each hole must be played to completion, there are no conceded putts, and no one may pick up after hitting the ball poorly a couple of times and say “give me an eight.” Each hole must be finished even if a 10 or 11 is the result.
There are 14 golfers on the Fluco squad this season, Searcy said.

In competitions, the coach designates his top six golfers for the match. The top four scores from these six golfers are then added together to establish the team’s score.
For the Jefferson District match, the Flucos’ top six included three seniors, a junior and two sophomores. Stanke played in the number one slot, and seniors Colby DeForge and Charlie Searcy played in the fifth and sixth slots. Pace played at number two and Baber at number three. Sophomore Jack Kershner rounded out the field for the Flucos playing in the four slot.
Searcy noted that newcomers Justin Warner and Ethan Yancey are showing promise and will probably be involved in competitions in the future.

Due to the rapid approach of the end of daylight savings time, the golf schedule has to be front loaded in the fall sports schedule. Accordingly, the Flucos were scheduled to compete on Aug. 16, 17 and 18. They hosted the Charlottesville team on the Lake Monticello course on Aug. 16. On Aug. 17 they traveled to Fort Defiance High School and on Aug. 18 they were at Louisa High School.

On Aug. 24 they will host teams from Monticello High School and Madison High School. On Aug. 29 they travel to William Monroe and then return home on Aug. 31 to take on Jefferson District rival Albemarle High School.

By the end of September their schedule is over. In contrast, the Fluco football team and the volleyball team are only halfway through their schedules by the end of September.
