Football Coach Steve Szarmach said that his team endured some injuries this season that the team fought through. Although his team did not have the success that he hoped for, Szarmach noted that a number of Fluco football players garnered honorable mention recognition and one player was named to the all-conference first team. Alan Torres was named to the first team for his outstanding punting during the year. Designation of honorable mention went to Jake Morris at offensive line, Joey Van Dyke at tight end, Jordan Melton for all-around offensive performance and Craig Russo at linebacker. Melton started the season at running back and then shifted to quarterback, due to injuries.
Boys’ cross country Coach Tom Casto announced that Jack Rice was his team’s honoree at the conference level. He was named to the all-conference team. Rice failed to qualify to run at the state cross country meet by a mere five seconds. Girls’ cross country coach Rose Brogan reported that Saige Haney and Jackie Rodriguez were both all-conference, and that Haney had recently been honored as an all Central Virginia runner. Both athletes qualified to run in the state meet, where Haney finished 24th and Rodriguez was 58th. The girls’ cross country team finished fourth in the conference.
Volleyball Coach Christi Harlowe-Garett was next to the microphone. She said that four of her players received all-conference recognition. Sophie Kershner was a first team selection. Abby Sherman and Candice Shaheen were second team selections and Amanda Harris was a conference honorable mention. Shaheen was selected for the defensive position of libero. Kershner also received honorable mention at regional level. The volleyball team finished the season with a 12-12 record.
Coach Bryan Searcy announced that the golf team’s standout was Jack Stanke, who won all-conference and all-region recognition and qualified to play in the state tournament. Searcy also noted that he had a young team this season that included two female golfers for the first time.
Last to the microphone was Julia Hogue, coach of the sideline cheerleaders and of the competitive cheer squad. Hogue complimented her sideline squad for its enthusiastic performances at football games throughout the season. She said that the competition cheer squad finished in third place in the district competition and in fourth place in the conference competition. Five of the competition cheer members gained all-conference recognition. They were Frances Fulton, Amina Wilson, Madison Brown, Emily Liles and Briana Knox.
Fluvanna County High will now rapidly transition to the winter sports season. Athletes will compete in boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling, swim and dive and indoor track and field.
