The curriculum at the camps includes riding lessons, trail riding, and horse care, such as feeding, clipping, hoof care, bathing and first aid. Also included is study of equine anatomy, and some training in judging and critiquing. The first session of the day camp in June was listed in the brochure as being for all skill levels. The July session is listed as a full-day intermediate session. The cost for these camps is $299. Participants need to have their own riding boots and bring swim gear as there may be pool time, weather permitting.
Alyson Pieno, a recreation program specialist, is the parks and recreation liaison for this program, She is a 2012 graduate of Fluvanna County High School where she played soccer and ran track and cross country. She is a recent Radford University graduate. Pieno explained that Fluvanna County Parks and Recreation provides administrative services to support these camp programs, as registration is primarily through the parks and recreation office. Pieno noted that the Equus Springs Farm also runs a series of classes from May to August. These programs are for beginners, intermediate riders and more experienced hunter riders. They are one hour a day once a week for four weeks. These sessions have a $100 price tag.
Another interesting offering from Equus Springs Farm is llama treks, which involve walks with llamas on the hiking trails at Pleasant Grove.
