Curbside recycling pickup will return to Lake Monticello in June — but at a price.
By a 6-1 vote, the Lake Monticello Board of Directors has approved a contract amendment with County Waste at their regular meeting on Thursday (April 26).
Under the new plan, all residents will be given a 65-gallon totes for recyclables. County Waste will dedicate one day a week to recycling pickup and trash service will be reduced to the remaining four days.
County Waste will begin distributing totes in May, with service to begin on June 1.
The service will add $4 a month, or $48 per year, to each households’ improved property fee.
By comparison, Time Disposal announced last month that customers could expect to pay $6 a month for curbside pickup.
LMOA Contracts manager Angie Cook told the board that Lake Monticello had provided curbside recycling since 1997 and that it is obligated to do so under LMOA policy. The contract will run through May 31, 2023,
The community, like most area residents, lost their recycling earlier this year when Van Der Linde Recycling suddenly announced they would stop processing household waste at its Fluvanna County facility.
County Waste, like other area trash companies, was dumping its loads with Van Der Linde so recyclable materials could be culled from non-recyclable waste, a process known as single-stream recycling.
Lake officials set up temporary dumpsters for recycling at Tufton Pond and the campground, but these were quickly overwhelmed. For more than a month, residents wishing to recycle have had to use the Fluvanna County Convenience Center of the McIntire Recycling Center in Charlottesville.
