Also, at the fore nationally is gun control legislation, and there was introduced in the Virginia legislature provisions to close the gun show “loophole” which allows gun show sales to be conducted without background checks.
And what was the fate of these bills? They were killed in committee by a handful of legislators in the Republican controlled General Assembly. This is an absolute travesty of the democratic process. Have the Republicans learned nothing from November’s election results, which were evidence that their agenda is quite far removed from the mainstream of public opinion? These bills should have been permitted to go forward to the full House and Senate for a vote to allow each and every citizen to see where their individual representative casts his/her vote on these very important issues. This type of obstructionism is not just a product of the national government, but is ever present in the Commonwealth.
