School Board

“We are fortunate to have Sgt. Lopez join our team,” said Superintendent Gena Keller.  “Along with Officer Shifflet, they will be a wonderful resource and positive mentor for our students.”

Drivers/food service recognized

The Board also recognized 78 food service workers and school bus drivers for the contributions they make to keeping students happy and healthy.

Certificates of appreciation were handed out to 20 businesses and organizations who donated materials for Day of Caring projects, and 17 individual Day of Caring volunteers who helped work on a wide range of tasks, from beautifying the flower beds at the School Board office to turning abandoned tennis courts into useful play space at Fluvanna Middle School.

Disability awareness

Katrina Lee, director of special education, announced that October is Disability Awareness Month, and asked school board members to wear special lapel ribbons, and to spread the word about the work being done in Fluvanna schools with differently abled students.

Ed Breslauer, the school finance director, said that his office has made the change from a cash accounting system to an accrual accounting system.  This new system is a “best practice” method that brings the county in line with other school districts and the Fluvanna County finance office, and streamlines finance communications between the school division and the county.  “We will be speaking the same language; we are getting rid of the speed bumps,” said Breslauer.

As a result of this change, a perceived $80,417.49 carryover in local funds has been found to be a deficit of $96,830.  A request for additional funding for FY2014 in that amount has been put on the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors agenda for their Oct. 15 meeting.

Breslauer also informed the board that the conversion to MUNIS, a software system that manages municipal core functions such as financials, workforce management, and citizen services and revenues, is right on schedule.  The county also is making the conversion, which is expected to be completed by Jan. 1, 2016.  This will also make communication seamless between the county government and the school system.
