Teachers losing influence

During the past year, and again this month in honor of American Education Week, the FEA has made specific proposals to the School Board to allow Fluvanna school staff increasing and risk-free opportunities for input, including a staff liaison to the School Board (they already have a Student Liaison), adding “Reports from Staff” to the School Board agenda (they already have “Reports from the Superintendent”), and/or rotating School Board member attendance at monthly staff advisory meetings.
The same survey that documents teachers’ lack of input, contains other indicators that Fluvanna teachers feel diminishing levels of support from the School Board and administration. The FEA believes many issues of morale can be addressed by more fully including all stakeholders in instructional and professional decisions.
Teachers appreciate the good intentions of every school decision maker; we ask them to appreciate our desire to make a bigger difference for public education.
