A tribute to Red Pulliam

My own experience with Red included his early and active involvement with the Fluvanna Heritage Trail. Red was involved from the very outset of the creation of the Heritage Trail. He helped clear the new trails at Pleasant Grove, and over many years headed our volunteer efforts and supervised the maintenance of the trails. He led the team of volunteers who cleared the Heritage Rail Trail after the Foundation purchased it in 2003. He was the vice president of the Fluvanna Heritage Trail Foundation and almost never missed one of our meetings. Each year he supervised dozens of students from the University of Virginia’s Alpha Phi Omega community service fraternity when they spent the day working on our trails. His late wife, Patsy, organized the effort to feed the students lunch after they had worked hard all morning. For all these efforts, Red was named the American Hiking Society’s Virginia Volunteer of the Year in 2011.
Red Pulliam was an inspiration to all who knew him.
