Letters to the Editor

Thanks for bluebird article
We want to thank Page Gifford and the Fluvanna Review for writing and publishing the great article, “Bluebirds make a comeback to Fluvanna” in the March 16 edition. The beautifully newly refurbished room at the Lake Monticello Clubhouse was totally filled with bluebird enthusiasts to hear the presentations from Doug Rogers of the Virginia Bluebird Society, the incredible Clark Walter (the bluebird house builder), and our own Jim Haney.

Volunteer event refreshing
I was fortunate to be on the campus of Fluvanna County High School on Friday, March 31 to witness Hands On Fluvanna 2017. This is the second year for this day of school-wide community service. It was inspiring to observe the entire student body working collaboratively to make sleeping mats for the homeless, to prepare goodie bags filled with treats and heart-felt notes for our men and women in the armed services, and to make colorful flowers for gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery. Other groups of volunteers spread throughout the county to assist 29 different businesses, organizations, and individuals with projects.

It was truly remarkable and uplifting to observe the dedication to the tasks at hand as well as the enthusiasm displayed by FCHS students. Being a veteran of the Vietnam era, my heart was especially warmed by the projects targeted to those who currently serve our country and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice defending it.

I extend special thanks and appreciation to the FCHS Student Government Association, the Interact Club, the entire staff at FCHS (especially Mr. David Small, whose enthusiasm was contagious), and the student body. In this day and age when our young people are often maligned for their apathy and self-interest, it was refreshing to witness Hands On Fluvanna and to have faith in the future restored and confirmed.
