Fluvanna Faces: Barbara Nazar

By Madeline Otten, Correspondent

Where do you live?
Fox Hollow

How long have you lived in Fluvanna? What brought you here?
16 years. I wanted to move away from Long Island. My husband and I looked for gated communities in central Virginia.

Tell us about your family.
I am married to Doug Nazar, and we have three daughters: Jordan, Madi and Brooke.

Do you have more family in Fluvanna County?
Yes, a sister and her family.

What was your very first job?
I was a teacher at Effort Christian School and Preschool.

What do you do for a living?
I am a pre-K teacher at Fluvanna County Public Schools (FCPS), and I love it!

What is one of your pet peeves?
Chick-fil-A is closed on Sunday.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Playing soccer with my daughters, reading, seeing movies, and going on walks.

Books or movies?
Both, but always the book first.

Favorite book or series? Favorite movie?
All of the Harry Potter series. I was able to read them with my children, and they loved the books as much as I did. We even continue to read and watch as a family. We just went to see Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald together for my birthday, all five of us, and it was great.

What pivotal decision helped to shape your life?
Moving to a new place in Virginia with small children. Not knowing anyone was scary and exciting. We didn’t know anyone but felt welcomed as soon as we moved in. From the Lake Monticello neighbors, Fluvanna schools, Sts. Peter and Paul Church, the real estate folks – everyone made the transition very easy. Fluvanna is a great place to raise a family.

Tell us about a way you have changed over the years.
When we first moved here, we did not know a lot of people. Getting to know our neighbors and becoming involved in church, school and soccer helped us meet new neighbors and friends.

What has surprised you about your life?
Changing jobs after 15 years to teach in public school. I love everything about FCPS: children, teachers, staff and administration.

What’s one thing you hope to accomplish before you die?
Travel to England and Ireland with my family.

Tell us about one of your regrets.
Not finishing college sooner.

Tell us about your proudest moment.
Graduating college at 50 years old.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done in Fluvanna?
I went tubing on the Rivanna River. It took six hours…never again.

What quote or saying do you connect with most?
“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.” – Jane Austen
