Holistic outreach services offered to veterans

Press release

Holistic Outreach for Veterans (HOV) will host its first event in Fluvanna County, offering holistic services free of charge to veterans. The group will meet at Salon DeShano Monday (July 22) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Subsequent events will be held the fourth Monday of every month.

HOV is a volunteer program for veterans focused on stress reduction and relaxation to promote the body and spirit’s natural abilities to heal and recover from trauma. Services will be offered on a drop-in, first-come first-served basis in a group setting where veterans will receive all services fully clothed.  Licensed, trained practitioners will be providing the treatments.

Group founder Kim Munson is a reiki master teacher and mindfulness meditation instructor who lives, practices and teaches in Fluvanna County. Her father was a WWII Army veteran and her son is an Operation Enduring Freedom Marine veteran. The experiences of her father and son showed her the real need for and benefit of these services.

Holistic modalities treat the physical and emotional effects of trauma by gently bringing the body into a state of calm and balance. Through gentle, noninvasive touch, the central nervous system relaxes into a restorative state of rest. Many services can also be rendered without touch.

Veterans will be treated in a caring, compassionate and confidential environment. These modalities have been shown to be helpful with pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, PTSD, concentration, addiction, sleep disorders, musculoskeletal issues and much more.

Types of modalities offered are reiki, massage, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, acupressure, zero balancing, meditation, aromatherapy and nutritional counseling, depending upon available practitioners.

Salon DeShano is located at 202 Turkey Sag Trail #2 in Palmyra. Owners Jacqui and Jeff DeShano are also a military family. They are donating the use of the salon for this community program.

Contact Kim Munson at 434-249-1806 or Roy Hughes at 434-202-9703 for more information. To volunteer, visit HOV via Facebook or email holisticoutreachforveterans@yahoo.com.
