Fluco Competition Cheer squad finishes second at Jefferson District event

By Duncan Nixon

Louisa High School was the site of the Jefferson District competition cheer event on Monday, March 15. However, only three Jefferson District schools had cheer squads that competed.

Competition cheer is a sport that requires a very high level of coordinated movement and it therefore requires a substantial amount of practice time for a squad to be highly proficient. The competition routines are short, but intensely athletic. Each routine must include a number of elements, such as dance, and tumbling. Pyramid lifts are also an element.

The Fluco squad was very well coordinated and its tumbling routines were not easy. Unfortunately, the Louisa Lions squad was a little bit stronger and they took first place, with the Flucos under Coach Kenny Larios finishing second.

The Fluco squad includes six seniors, Delaney Hammond, Maddie Scopelliti, Danielle Bryant, Rebecca Taylor, Addie Roth and Ellie Miles. There are also six juniors, Sydney Forren, Jacob Henderson, Taylor Parker, Evie Benson, Anne Charlotte Robinson and Zachary Fontenot. There are no sophomores on the team. Three freshmen are also on the squad. They are Kelsey Randolph, Olivia Reardon and Sarah Beth Robinson. In competition cheer there is no starting line-up with substitutes who come in off the bench, or third stringers who hardly ever play. All of the participants must be up to snuff or the whole team will not look good. The Fluco squad

will now move on to the region competition.
