BURKE, Liam Gerard (Gerry), printer, Dunmore East, County Waterford, Ireland, July 26, 1939—August 28, 2023, passed away peacefully, attended by his wife Irene and son, Michael. He is predeceased by his parents, Eddie and Kitty (O’Mahony), brother Tony (Ruby) and infant son Sean. Gerry is survived by his wife, Irene, her children, Judy and David; his brothers: Jim (Kathleen), John, and Michael (Rosario); Gerry’s children Edmund (Jeannine [Tess and Bridget]); Patrick (Janet); Michael (Jane); Maryanne, Jim, and Grace, grandchildren Erin, Jack and Declan, and former spouse, Mary Ann Manchester.
On Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 10 a.m. a funeral mass at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Palmyra, Virginia celebrates his life. Interment of his ashes in Killea, Ireland will be at a later date.
Educated at Mt. Sion, Waterford, Gerry worked at the Munster Express until he was 17, he learned his trade as a printer in Toronto then joined the San Francisco Chronicle and the L.A. Times thence to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands where he set up new printing presses and trained local newspaper staff, then to Washington, D.C. at The Washington Post.
In 1969 Gerry moved to Ireland, created the Burke Printers in Dunmore East (Killea), spending the next 16 years raising a family and building his print business.
In 1984 Gerry and family moved to Huntington Beach, CA. then relocated to Maryland, to work on Capitol Hill (U.S. Congress, Senate side) for the U.S. Government Printing Office. In 2001 Gerry and Irene Cookson wed; after retirement, they moved to Lake Monticello, Virginia. An avid golfer, at one time Gerry belonged to both the Lake Monticello and Spring Creek clubs.
