A Fluvanna County special grand jury has indicted a man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred more than two years ago on Ridge Road.

Maurice Lecroy Brown was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the August 2023 killing of 43-year-old Johnnie Antoine Brown.

He was taken into custody Feb. 18 at his residence without incident and is currently being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail.

The charges stem from a shooting reported around 3 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2023, in the 3700 block of Ridge Road.

Fluvanna County Sheriff’s deputies and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a call of a person shot and found Johnnie Brown suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.

At the time, investigators said an eyewitness reported seeing multiple individuals leave the area in a two-door vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office described the case as an active investigation and asked for the public’s help in identifying suspects.

In announcing the arrest, the Sheriff’s Office thanked the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and assisting agencies for their work.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to reach out to the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office or contact the Criminal Investigations Section directly. Tips can also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.

Brown’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 20.
