In the first event of the Fluco fall sports season, the Fluvanna High golf team hosted a 14-school event on Aug. 6. Teams from all over central Virginia competed.
This early-season tournament is named for George Bockman, who was a major supporter of Fluco sports. He was an assistant coach in softball and golf. He drove team buses, and he built dugouts and press boxes. He frequently served as the timekeeper in the Fluco press box.
In this tournament, the Fluco golf team under Head Coach Wiley House and new Assistant Coach Mason Chiovaro turned in a solid performance. Five players are entered from each school, and the best four scores count. The top three players on the Fluvanna list of five all came in with a decent score of 87. The lowest score for a Fluvanna golfer was posted by senior female golfer Blair Marshall, who was listed as the number four golfer; she shot 44- 40 for a score of 84. Obviously, the Fluco squad is well balanced.
The Fluco top three on the entry chart were freshman Chase Botto and seniors Thomas Hanse and Tyson Owen. They all managed to shoot 87 in slightly different ways. Botto shot 42-45. Hanse shot 45-42, and Owen posted a 43-44. The fifth player for the Flucos was freshman Lucas Wilson, whose 48-44 score would have put him in the top three on many of the other teams in the tournament.
The Fluco total score was 345, which was good for fourth place. From the Bockman tournament, the Flucos moved to a Jefferson District tournament hosted by Albemarle High on Aug. 10. They then play at Louisa on Aug. 13 and at Orange on Aug. 17. They will be home, hosting Goochland on Aug. 20. They then host Albemarle and Madison on Aug. 24 and 26.
