The E.W. Thomas Market celebrated its centennial year in business with a well-earned birthday bash on Sunday, Sept. 20. Hundreds of well-wishers turned out to enjoy food, prize giveaways, wine tastings, and more. And because no business makes it to 100 without knowing how to multitask, the store remained open for regular Sunday shopping throughout the event.
This Palmyra institution was founded in 1926, when Edward Thomas Sr. opened E.W. Thomas General Store. In 1969, his son, E.W. Thomas Jr., moved the business to its current location. Still family-owned, the store is now operated by the third generation: Beth, Linda, Lee, and Ann.
Over the decades, E.W. Thomas has become known for its fried chicken, served as a first job for generations of young Fluvannians, and quietly supported the surrounding community. The day’s gathering celebrated more than a long-running grocery store. It honored a century 100 of family, service, and deep community roots.
