There are some interesting goings-on at the Lake Monticello Golf Course this weekend and throughout the summer.
The Lake Monticello Travelers will host their counterparts from Orchard Creek, formerly Waynesboro Country Club, on July 16. The Travelers are a squad of lower-handicap senior men who play home-and-away matches throughout the summer against teams from other Central Virginia golf courses and clubs. On July 23, they will play at Orchard Creek. Other participating golf courses and clubs include Farmington, Birdwood, Glenmore, Green Hills, Old Trail, and Stoney Creek.
Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19, will be Championship Weekend at the Lake Monticello course. The two-day tournament will be medal play, meaning the lowest overall score wins. There will be both net and gross score champions, as well as a men’s champion, a men’s senior champion, a men’s super-senior champion, and a women’s champion.
Competitors in the open men’s medal play will tee off from the white tees. Senior competitors ages 56–69 will tee off from the orange tees. Men’s super-seniors, ages 70 and older, will tee off from the gold tees, and women will tee off from the red tees.
Another interesting competition running through the rest of July and all of August is the Beat the Pro contest. Lake Monticello Assistant Pro Mason Chiovaro is offering to compete against any Lake Monticello resident at any time. The competition is limited to Lake Monticello residents.
Anyone who beats the pro will win a sleeve of golf balls, have their name prominently displayed on Chiovaro’s desk for the rest of the contest period and, of course, earn bragging rights.
Chiovaro will have a slight advantage, as challengers will play with only 80% of their handicaps. Someone with a 10 handicap, for example, will receive only eight strokes.
