Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 31st home—and the latest completed in its Houchens Place community—during a ceremony Sunday, June 14.
The new homeowner hosted the open house before the ceremony at her new home. The event was attended by family and friends, the Fluvanna Habitat Board of Directors, community leaders, and Habitat volunteers.
Pastor Warren McIvor of Calvary Chapel Fluvanna offered a blessing and prayer for the homeowner and her new home.
Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity continues to build two homes each year in the Houchens
Place community. When completed, the 64-acre property, purchased by the nonprofit in 2014, is expected to include 26 homes, almost 30 acres of protected open space and a recreational area with a playground and other amenities.
Working with volunteers and local contractor DES Construction, the organization builds three-bedroom, two-bath homes designed to be energy-efficient and environmentally responsible. Volunteer labor and donations help reduce construction costs and make the resulting mortgages more affordable for participating families.
Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity works with Fluvanna families who need a safe, decent
home and who are willing to work with us as partners to become financially able
homebuyers. Families must spend at least 100 hours in “sweat equity” participating in
financial literacy and homeownership classes as well as helping to build homes.
The organization thanked the volunteers and community partners who contributed to the home, including Calvary Chapel Fluvanna, Cunningham United Methodist Church, D+J Photography, Effort Baptist Church, the Fluvanna Habitat Board of Directors, Jonnie Oliver and Jefferson Pharmacy, the Lake Monticello Piecemakers, Mission Crafters of South Plains Presbyterian Church in Keswick, the Monticello Area Community Action Agency and the Rusty Nailz Fluvanna Habitat volunteer team.
