PaPa Jim’s serving up some tasty treats

“We serve all types of soft serve ice cream treats including banana splits, shakes, and sundaes,” said Jim Toms, who opened the business last October. “Our specialty desserts are the Arctic Blast and the Avalanche.”

“It’s been doing well and business has been picking up now with the warm weather and summer coming,” said Toms.

“I’ve been in the food business for 38 years,” said Toms. He worked for SAGE Dining Services in Maryland for fifteen years and traveled for SAGE out West as a trouble shooter for the company, filling in and helping set up new accounts where needed. But with the sudden downturn in the economy, Toms’ position was eliminated. The same thing happened at the Oakland School where he worked for ten years.

“After a year of not finding work, I decided to start this business,” he said. “I started building my stand at my house on South Boston Road with the help of my wife, a retired RN from University of Virginia.”

PaPa Jim’s also has a collection of canines enjoying a tasty treat.

“Dogs are welcomed too,” he said, smiling.

PaPa Jim’s is open Tuesday to Thursday from noon to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m.-9 p.m. For more information, call 540-421-7867.
