As the saying goes, it was a “rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight.” I get so tired of my ancestors being denigrated by people who know nothing of our history. Poor farmers or mill workers killed for defense of their state of Virginia, not the Confederacy. Pat Cleburne, one of our most famous Irish Confederate generals, predicted that the history would be written as it is being written now. He gave his life at Franklin, Tennessee in 1864.
Ironically, in 1863 he proposed freeing all of the slaves who would fight for the freedom of the South.
